The Merging of Mails
My Griffith Mail
For the last 3 years of my uni life, I have continuously struggled with the logging in and checking of two different mail accounts. Hotmail and Griffith. Ugh! The frustration! I can not believe it has never occurred to me, until now, to forward my Griffith messages to my hotmail account. Something so simple has made my life 1000 time easier. Now I can keep track of both emails and always be "in the know" of what is going on. I love it!

SURVEY
To take the survey please follow the link
Click here to take survey
I had 42 responses for my survey. The results are as follows;
1. What is your main/favourite social media site?
2. What is your main use of social media sites? You can select more than one answer.
There were 3 responses in the comment field for this questions;
> "My business and ideas"
> "Laughing at the cancer on facebook"
> "Sharing photos, more fun, easy, less awkward way to share what's happening in your life"
3. Have you ever deleted/ deactivated you social media site? If YES, Why?

If YES, Why? There were 10 responses in the comment field for this questions;
> "Just wanted a break from social media for a while. In the time my account was 'deactivated' I realised how self-reliant I was on it. Social media is (in someways) very controlling and addictive."
> "Because its too hard to stay in contact with people without it!"
> "for a break - refresh the mind"
> "deactivated it during exams. have reactivated now."
> "To addicted"
> "Drunken posts, to much time on Facebook, yes have reactivated"
> "Bored"
> "Spent to much time on it, realised there were more important things. Then got bored so came back."
> "Boredom"
> "My boyfriend of the time made me. Yes im back online"
4. What percentage of your 'friends' or 'followers' would you speak to in real life?

5. In regards to privacy, How concerned are you about external entities (businesses & advertisers) accessing your data?

My Results
The results were similar to what i was expecting, as the respondents were mostly people in their early teens who are heavily involved with social media, however i did have a couple respondents who were above the age of 30. The most interesting findings, to me, was with question 4 (what percentage of your 'friends' or 'followers' would you speak to in real life), the results in percentage were higher than what i was expecting. I expected it to be a less percentage, as many people in social media will 'friend' someone who they've only met once. I enjoyed this task and found it really interesting to get feedback from my "friends" on facebook. The questions were similar to other surveys on the internet regarding social media, however i feel as though the results i obtained were not as widely spread because the respondents of my survey had too many similar characteristics, ie; age, generation, occupation, etc. etc.

Surveillance Cameras
What are IT engineers thinking about surveillance cameras?Camera surveillance in the streets may not be as efficient as they could be, due to the fact they have to cover large and complex areas. Because of this, IT engineers have proposed an alternative mobile robot option, which is expected to lower costs. They also mention the impacts this technology would have on crime investigations and crime deterrence.
"...we propose a method for determining the traveling route of a mobile surveillance camera. Our method is based on mixed integer linear programming and obtains an optimum traveling route such that a camera with a certain visual angle and visual distance can observe the entire region at the shortest intervals. Through our experiments, we apply this method to several artificially generated data and data for a real university campus and demonstrate that effective patrol courses for specified mobile surveillance cameras can be generated." (Tomioka, Takara & Kitazawa, 2012, p. 216-224)
An essay theme could be, Crime Prevention: Mobile Surveillance Shaping the Future.

Week 3 - Griffith Uni Databases
The database I would use to find Stephen Stockwells first academic article about Brisbane is;
By subject: Business and Government databases > Policy, Politics and Government > Journal Articles > LibrarySearch function. The year was 1995.
Stockwell, S. (1995). The Brisbane Model: Considering a Unique Experiment. Urban Policy and Research. 13(2), 89-96.
The latest medical thinking about internet addiction; Internet addiction is a rapidly growing issue or 'disease' as some may say. Whilst there is no actual treatment for it at this present time, there have been some attempts to 'cure' internet addiction with similar methods used for substance abuse and pathological gambling.
The database i found it in was; Health > Psychology > Journal Articles >search function
Beato, G. (2010). Internet Addiction. 42(4), 16.

My Experiences with NCT
Week 2 tutorial task - Part 2.
To communicate with my firends and family i rely heavily on my smart phone. I've had an iphone for 5ish years, and have recently made the transition to the Samsung Galaxy (as it was a christmas present last year). I communicate through messaging, calling, MMSing, and many apps including; Snapchat, Viber, Facebook, Instagram, communicating through games eg; Words with Friends, Heytell and email and any new app that is released i will more than likely use it at some point in time. I have always had ipods through highschool when they were first released. I've had about 20+ computers including personal laptops and home desktop computers. I am pretty sure my family has had a household computer since i was 6 years old. At the moment there is 2 laptops in my house, 2 desktop computers, an ipad, a samsung tablet, and many broken ipods and iphones in my draw. Bascially i can not survive without my smartphone or some form of internet to communciate. I was influenced by friends and peers to start using these technologies, and because EVERYONE had them and were using them. Privacy is not too big of an issue for me when i use these technologies as i customise settings to make my content 'private' and, if i feel the need to do so, i can block people specifically from viewing my personal information. Companies like Facebook and Google who collect information about their users... yeah there is defintely some kind of privacy issue there but you are using their software and applications and i guess they gather the info to better improve their products and software and tailor it to their consumers - us. I don't really have that much of an opinion on that matter. I don't have 'internet friends' who i only know on the internet, however i do have friends of friends, or people who i have only met once or twice. The End.
